Navigating in GNSS denied environments: An introduction to Flare Bright and the use of ML to reshape autonomous flight

This presentation will introduce the audience to Flare Bright, using flight test results to demonstrate a patent pending capability that is revolutionising navigation of autonomous aerial vehicles in GNSS-denied environments. Inertial Navigation Systems (INSs), using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), are invaluable for position estimation in GNSS-denied environments as no information to the aircraft is required. However, with no absolute measurement of a vehicle’s position or attitude, INSs suffer from significant drift over time. Flare Bright’s techniques, using a software only solution combining Machine Learning tuned Digital Twins and algorithms, boosts an inexpensive mobile phone IMU to deliver similar performance to that of a high-end, expensive and heavy IMU, over 1 hour long flights, thereby enabling extended flight operations of small uncrewed aerial systems in GNSS-denied environments. The talk will be a whistle-stop tour of this capability, accompanied by videos and data, to bring to life the real-world engineering development process, testing realities and challenges of a bring a new capability to market. Opportunities for those who wish to work with or for Flare Bright will also be explored, in the wider context of other avenues that interest the business.

We are always on the look-out for bright individuals interested in the ML/drone/robotics/aerospace sector who may be able to make a positive contribution to the business.
